The LiveWire™ lights up Cape Town!

I must admit that though I work for one of the most talked-about brands in the world, it’s easy to get weighed down with admin and sitting behind a desk all day. The distractions of everyday life slowly seep in and pull focus away from what Harley-Davidson® is all about: THE RIDE.

Luckily for me, there are occasions that I get pulled away from my laptop and have my mind completely blown by an experience that brings back every drop of excitement that pushed me to apply for a job here in the first place. I recently had a moment that outweighed most that I’ve had the privilege of experiencing in my 5 years at American Eagle Motorcycles.

Our general manager, Kallie, came to my office and told me to get down to the workshop immediately because there was something that I “needed to see”. Out of all the possibilities running through my mind, I was definitely not expecting to see the first LiveWire™ to hit our shores!

I have read about the LiveWire and I have done training on the LiveWire but NOTHING compares to what I felt when seeing it up close! For one thing, it’s even more beautiful in real life. The type of motorcycle that makes you look twice, and the more you look, the more you notice how much it differs from your average bike.

The digital display caught my eye first and I could not help but get tingles when the display lit up and I could see all the different riding options from “Street Mode” to “Sport Mode” and more. Then I looked where the fuel cap would have been and noticed the charging point. The battery makes a massive statement to the frame as well.

It took a moment to zone back in and realise that Kallie was asking me if I wanted to take it for a spin. Wait, what!? Are my fingertips sweating all of a sudden? Am I experienced enough to ride this? I’ve never even ridden a super bike. YES PLEASE.

I raced to fetch my riding gear and suited up. First thing I noticed when climbing onto the bike, is that I’m on the balls of my feet (I’m a bit short), but the bike is so well-balanced that it’s easy to pick up off the side stand. Then, to get my head around the fact that there is no clutch and no gears took a moment – old habits die hard.

I slowly twisted the throttle and the LiveWire began to roll forward, smoothly and seamlessly. In fact, I still can’t believe how smooth the entire ride was! Leaning forward to grip the handlebars and tucking my feet back made me hug the bike and was surprisingly comfortable. After my first stop and pull away, I didn’t miss the clutch at all! What I thought would be a ride full of over-thinking around how to operate the bike, turned into a ride where I didn’t think at all! I was completely focused on the feeling of exhilaration and my smile couldn’t have been bigger as other road users stared at the bike.

Did I miss the noise of a loud Harley® motorcycle? To be honest: a little. Not because it affected my experience of the LiveWire, but because I like a little attitude on a bike and I like to make sure other road users hear me approaching. HOWEVER, the lack of sound on the LiveWire suits the bike to a T. It’s sleek, smooth, incredibly fast and responsive and reminds me of a tiger silently stalking its prey, moving through the jungle quietly with menace.

I think the trick is to ride it with no pre-conceptions. This is not a motorcycle looking to compete with others in the H-D® range. This is a completely different animal looking to break boundaries and offer itself to a broad range of riders who hold power, torque and the latest technology in high regard.

Here's what you need to know about the LiveWire™

0 TO 100 km/ph IN 3 SECONDS

Get instantaneous power the moment you twist the throttle. No clutch to release. No gears to run through. All you do is flick your wrist and take off.

The LiveWire™ motorcycle features a high-voltage battery (or RESS; Rechargeable Energy Storage System) composed of lithium-ion cells surrounded by a finned, cast-aluminium housing. The high-voltage battery provides 146 miles (235 km) of city range or 95 miles (152 km) of combined stop-and-go and highway range.**

*Riding range estimates provided following the SAE J2982 and are based on expected performance of a fully-charged battery when operated under specified conditions. Actual range will vary depending on riding habits, ambient weather and equipment conditions.

**As measured using the MIC City and MIC Combined (70mph) tests.
